Just FYI...

“No distance of place or lapse of time can lessen the friendship of those who are thoroughly persuaded of each other’s worth.” — Robert Southey

I already said it on Twitter, but the following lyrics perfectly sum up my life from early September of last year until now and probably will continue to, for the foreseeable future:

And can you live with what you know about yourself,
When you’re all alone, behind closed doors?
The things we never said, but we always knew were right there.
It’s got me on my knees in a bathroom,
Praying to a God that I don’t even believe in,
“Well, dear Jesus, are you listening?”

I woke up this morning in the middle of a scream. It isn’t the first time. The images in my head are so painfully real, when I’m asleep. I don’t think too long or too hard about them when I’m awake, but there’s no brain filter when I’m unconscious.

Quirk #1 – Political Bands I Disagree With But Love Dearly

It is a widely known fact that I am not a socialist, nor do I have socialist leanings. I am, in fact, quite outspoken when it comes to my spite for most socialistic government programs. So why do I enjoy bands who embrace the socialist – and even anarchist – spirit?

Some of my favorite bands include:
- KMFDM
- Against Me!
- Manic Street Preachers
- Atari Teenage Riot
- Placebo
…and strangely enough, these are all musicians who are known for having heavily political lyrics and whose lyrics generally promote social & financial equality of people by almost any means. So why the hell do I enjoy their music, when I don’t personally support much of that in which they believe? Maybe it’s the general idea of it all, promoting unity and perseverance, that I can get behind? Whatever it is, my love for those bands is longstanding and won’t be going anywhere, any time soon.

Quirk #2 – Cover Songs Are AWESOME!

Most people either like music because of the actual music or because of the lyrics. I don’t know of many people who listen for ALL of it. Personally, I can hate lyrics and still really love a song AND hate the music, love the lyrics, love the song. The latter may explain why I enjoy Fall Out Boy as much as I do. I am a big fan of cover songs.

A few of my favorite songs happen to be covers – “To Have and To Hold” by Deftones (a Depeche Mode cover) and “Darling Nikki” by Foo Fighters (a Prince cover) immediately come to mind – and I have yet to figure out why this is. They’re almost always songs I enjoy immensely, as the original version, but enjoy even more as the cover. Yes, I’m a fan of the Deftones (they’re in my top five personal favorite bands of all time) and I dig the Foo Fighters, but Depeche Mode and Prince both far outweigh both of those groups in talent and longevity. They’re also better at performing their own songs. So why do I prefer the covers?
